The National Oil Company of Malawi is a Government of Malawi-owned strategic energy company responsible for petroleum importation and management of national fuel reserves across key depots in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Chilumba, Chipoka, and Mchinji. Established in 2010 and operational since 2012, NOCMA plays a critical role in ensuring fuel security in Malawi.
The company is now recruiting a highly experienced Legal Services Manager to lead its legal department and safeguard institutional compliance, contracts, litigation, and regulatory risk management.
Job Purpose:
The Legal Services Manager will oversee all legal operations of National Oil Company of Malawi, ensuring full compliance with national laws and regulations, managing legal risks, supporting executive decision-making, and protecting the company’s commercial and regulatory interests.
Key Responsibilities:
Legal Advisory & Compliance
- Provide expert legal opinions on corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters
- Interpret laws and ensure compliance with relevant legal frameworks
- Review and update internal policies and procedures
Contracts & Agreements
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, MOUs, and legal agreements
- Ensure legal soundness of all commercial transactions
- Manage contractual risk exposure
Litigation & Representation
- Handle litigation involving the company
- Represent the organization in court and arbitration cases
- Coordinate with external legal counsel
Governance & Risk Management
- Conduct legal research for decision-making support
- Advise leadership on risk mitigation strategies
- Improve complaint handling and governance frameworks
Team & Stakeholder Management
- Supervise Legal Services Officer
- Build relationships with regulators, government bodies, and stakeholders
- Support strategic corporate governance initiatives
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons) from a recognized institution
- Master’s degree in law or related field is an added advantage
- Minimum 5 years membership of the Malawi Law Society
- At least 8 years of legal practice experience
- Minimum 5 years in a senior corporate/legal advisory role
- Strong background in litigation, contract negotiation, and regulatory law
