Job Overview

The Chief Data Privacy Officer (CDPO) will lead KPMG Malawi’s data protection strategy, ensuring compliance with the Malawi Data Protection Act, GDPR, and other relevant regulations. This senior role reports directly to the Managing Partner and works closely with the Legal, IT, and Risk Management teams to embed privacy by design across all service lines. The CDPO will act as the primary advisor for clients on privacy governance, data breach response, and cross‑border data transfers, positioning KPMG as a trusted advisor in the rapidly evolving data privacy landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive data privacy framework aligned with local and international regulations.
  • Lead privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for client projects and internal initiatives.
  • Advise senior leadership on privacy risks, mitigation strategies, and regulatory changes.
  • Oversee incident response plans, including breach detection, reporting, and remediation.
  • Conduct regular training and awareness programs for staff and clients on data protection best practices.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel to draft and review privacy policies, contracts, and data processing agreements.
  • Monitor and audit data handling practices across all business units to ensure continuous compliance.
  • Represent KPMG Malawi in regulatory forums, industry conferences, and stakeholder meetings.

Required Skills

  • Deep knowledge of the Malawi Data Protection Act, GDPR, CCPA, and other global privacy regimes.
  • Proven experience in designing and executing privacy programs for large organizations.
  • Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex legal concepts into actionable business advice.
  • Leadership experience managing cross‑functional teams and external consultants.
  • Familiarity with information security standards such as ISO 27001 and NIST.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle high‑stakes privacy incidents.

Education

A Master’s degree in Law, Information Security, Computer Science, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM, or ISO 27701 Lead Implementer are highly desirable.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of progressive experience in data privacy, compliance, or information security, with a minimum of five years in a senior leadership role. Experience advising multinational clients and familiarity with the financial services, healthcare, or telecommunications sectors will be considered an advantage.

Salary
