Job Overview

The Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) will spearhead the development and execution of Anglo American Malawi’s sustainability strategy, ensuring alignment with global corporate goals and local regulatory requirements. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the CSO will lead cross‑functional teams to integrate environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance (ESG) principles into all aspects of mining operations. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability roadmap that aligns with Anglo American’s global ESG framework.
• Lead the integration of sustainability metrics into operational decision‑making, ensuring compliance with Malawi’s environmental regulations.
• Oversee carbon reduction initiatives, renewable energy adoption, and waste minimisation programmes across all mining sites.
• Manage water stewardship projects, including recycling, treatment, and community water access improvements.
• Collaborate with community leaders to design and execute social investment programs that enhance education, health, and livelihoods.
• Prepare and present ESG reports to senior leadership, board members, investors, and regulatory bodies.
• Conduct risk assessments related to climate change, biodiversity loss, and social impacts, recommending mitigation strategies.
• Drive stakeholder engagement through transparent communication, public consultations, and partnership development.
• Mentor and build capacity within internal teams to embed sustainability thinking across all functions.
• Stay abreast of emerging sustainability trends, technologies, and standards to continuously improve performance.

Required Skills

• Strategic leadership with a proven track record in sustainability within the mining or heavy‑industry sector.
• Deep understanding of ESG reporting standards such as GRI, SASB, and TCFD.

Education

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in sustainability leadership, with at least 5 years in a senior role within the mining, metals, or related heavy‑industry sector. Demonstrated success in delivering measurable ESG outcomes and managing large, multidisciplinary teams.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to 4,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. A performance‑based bonus structure and long‑term incentive plans are also part of the compensation package.
