Job Overview

The Senior Microgrid Design Engineer will play a pivotal role in our regional expansion, specifically focusing on the design, implementation, and optimization of microgrid systems in the Thyolo region. This role is critical for developing resilient, decentralized power systems that integrate solar, wind, and battery storage technologies. You will lead the technical lifecycle of complex energy projects, from initial feasibility studies and load profiling to detailed electrical design and commissioning. This position requires a deep understanding of power electronics, control systems, and energy management software. As we look to expand employment in Malawi within the green energy sector, this role serves as a technical cornerstone for our engineering department.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, project managers, and local stakeholders, to ensure that every microgrid solution is tailored to the specific geographic and socio-economic needs of the community. This is not just a technical role; it is a leadership position that requires strategic thinking and the ability to navigate the complexities of modern energy landscapes. If you are looking for hiring in Malawi that offers high-level technical challenges and the chance to shape the future of energy, this is the position for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design of complex microgrid architectures, including AC/DC coupling and hybrid renewable integration.
  • Perform detailed electrical calculations, including short-circuit analysis, load flow studies, and protection coordination.
  • Develop sophisticated control strategies for energy management systems (EMS) to optimize battery life and renewable penetration.
  • Oversee the selection and specification of critical hardware such as inverters, transformers, and energy storage systems.
  • Collaborate with local utility providers to ensure seamless grid interconnection and compliance with national standards.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and field technicians during the installation and commissioning phases.
  • Conduct site assessments and feasibility studies to determine the optimal configuration for remote energy systems.

Required Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in electrical modeling software such as ETAP, PSS/E, or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Deep expertise in power electronics, specifically regarding solar PV inverters and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Strong understanding of microgrid control logic and communication protocols (Modbus, CANbus, IEC 61850).
  • Exceptional project management skills with the ability to manage technical timelines and budgets.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities in high-pressure environments.
  • Strong communication skills to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
