Job Overview
The Chief Compliance Officer will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and overseeing the bank’s compliance strategy across all business lines. This senior leadership position reports directly to the Managing Director and works closely with the Board of Directors, Risk Management, Legal, and Business Units to embed a culture of compliance throughout the organization.
Key objectives include monitoring regulatory changes, conducting risk assessments, developing policies and procedures, and ensuring effective training and communication across the bank. The role also involves liaising with the Reserve Bank of Malawi, international regulators, and industry bodies to maintain a proactive compliance posture.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive compliance framework aligned with local laws, Basel III, AML/CFT regulations, and international best practices.
- Monitor regulatory developments in Malawi and globally, assess impact, and advise senior management on necessary actions.
- Lead periodic compliance risk assessments, internal audits, and remediation plans to mitigate identified gaps.
- Oversee the design, delivery, and effectiveness of compliance training programs for all staff levels.
- Collaborate with the Risk Management team to integrate compliance risk into the overall risk appetite and reporting structure.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory examinations, investigations, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare and present compliance reports to the Board’s Audit Committee and senior leadership.
- Foster a culture of ethical behavior by promoting awareness, transparency, and accountability across the organization.
Required Skills
- Deep understanding of Malawian banking regulations, AML/CFT, and international compliance standards.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a strategic mindset.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of influencing senior executives and regulators.
- Proven leadership experience in building and managing high‑performing compliance teams.
- Ability to interpret complex legal texts and translate them into practical policies.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and ethical judgment.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as Certified Anti‑Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), or equivalent are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in compliance, risk management, or regulatory affairs within the banking or financial services sector. Prior experience in a senior leadership role, preferably as a Compliance Director or Head of Compliance, is essential.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 5,000,000 to SSP 7,500,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, pension contributions, and other statutory benefits.
