Job Overview

The Mine Safety Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive safety programs at Glencore’s Karonga mine. Key Responsibilities

• Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
• Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and implement corrective actions.
• Provide safety training and toolbox talks to all personnel, ensuring competency and compliance.
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to integrate safety considerations into project designs and operational processes.
• Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and documentation for internal and regulatory review.
• Monitor compliance with Malawi Occupational Safety and Health Act and international mining safety standards.
• Facilitate communication with local communities and regulatory agencies regarding safety initiatives.
• Prepare and present safety performance metrics to senior management.
• Promote a proactive safety culture through continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Skills

• In-depth knowledge of mining safety regulations, ISO 45001, and best practices.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities for hazard identification and risk mitigation.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for training and stakeholder engagement.
• Proficiency in safety management software and data analysis tools.
• Ability to lead investigations and produce clear, actionable reports.

• Fluency in English; knowledge of Chichewa is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in mine safety management, preferably within large‑scale underground or open‑pit operations. Demonstrated experience in conducting safety audits, incident investigations, and delivering effective training programs is essential.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances may be applicable.
