Job Overview

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of hydrogen fuel cell systems for Shell’s renewable energy projects in Malawi. Reporting to the Head of Renewable Energy Engineering, the successful candidate will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including research, operations, and supply chain, to deliver high‑performance, safe, and cost‑effective fuel cell solutions. Key Responsibilities

• Design, prototype, and test hydrogen fuel cell modules for stationary and mobile applications.
• Conduct feasibility studies, performance modeling, and cost‑benefit analyses to support project decisions.
• Collaborate with local universities and research institutes to advance fuel cell technology and build local expertise.
• Ensure compliance with international safety standards, local regulations, and Shell’s internal policies.
• Lead multidisciplinary project teams, managing timelines, budgets, and risk mitigation strategies.
• Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.
• Support the procurement of components, overseeing supplier qualification and quality assurance.
• Participate in community outreach programs to promote awareness of hydrogen energy benefits.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of hydrogen fuel cell architecture, electrochemistry, and system integration.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, ANSYS).
• Experience with project management methodologies and tools.
• Excellent problem‑solving abilities and analytical thinking.
• Effective communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Ability to work independently and lead cross‑functional teams.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or relevant professional certifications (e.g., PE, PMP) are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in fuel cell development, renewable energy systems, or related engineering fields. Experience working in emerging markets, particularly within Africa, and familiarity with local regulatory frameworks will be advantageous.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based incentives and annual bonuses are also part of the remuneration package.
