Job Overview
The Renewable Energy Storage Systems Engineer will design, develop, and implement advanced battery storage solutions for utility‑scale and commercial projects throughout Malawi. Key Responsibilities
- Design and engineer battery energy storage systems (BESS) for utility‑scale, commercial, and micro‑grid applications.
- Perform detailed load analysis, sizing calculations, and performance modeling using industry‑standard software.
- Collaborate with project managers, civil engineers, and procurement teams to ensure seamless integration of storage solutions.
- Develop technical specifications, procurement documents, and vendor evaluation criteria.
- Oversee installation, commissioning, and testing phases, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Provide technical support for operation and maintenance teams, troubleshooting system issues and optimizing performance.
- Stay updated on emerging storage technologies, market trends, and regulatory frameworks in Malawi and the broader Southern Africa region.
- Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and presentations for internal stakeholders and external clients.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of battery chemistries (Li‑ion, flow, lead‑acid) and energy management systems.
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as HOMER, PVSyst, or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience with grid interconnection standards, IEC 62933, and local Malawi utility regulations.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and analytical mindset.
- Effective communication skills for cross‑functional collaboration and client interaction.
- Project management experience, including scheduling, budgeting, and risk assessment.
- Ability to work independently and travel to project sites across Malawi.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Advanced certifications in energy storage, such as the Certified Energy Storage Professional (CESP) or relevant Schneider Electric training, are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of five years’ experience designing, implementing, or managing energy storage projects, preferably in emerging markets. Demonstrated experience with utility‑scale projects and familiarity with the African energy sector will be considered a strong advantage.
Salary
The competitive salary range for this role is SSP 2,500,000 – 3,500,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and benefits are included.
