Job Overview
The Credit Risk Modeling Analyst will design, develop, and maintain quantitative models that assess credit risk across the bank’s loan portfolio. Working closely with the Risk Management, Credit, and Data Analytics teams, you will provide actionable insights that guide credit approval processes, portfolio monitoring, and regulatory reporting. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that Absa Bank Malawi adheres to local and international risk standards while supporting the bank’s growth objectives.
As part of the role, you will engage with senior stakeholders, present model outcomes, and recommend risk mitigation strategies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, validate, and maintain credit risk scoring models, PD (Probability of Default) models, and loss‑given‑default (LGD) models.
- Perform data extraction, cleaning, and transformation using SQL, Python, or R to support model development.
- Collaborate with Credit Officers to incorporate model outputs into credit approval workflows.
- Conduct stress testing and scenario analysis to evaluate portfolio resilience under adverse economic conditions.
- Prepare comprehensive model documentation, validation reports, and regulatory submissions.
- Monitor model performance, recalibrate parameters, and implement enhancements as needed.
- Provide training and guidance to junior analysts and business users on model interpretation.
- Stay updated on Basel III/IV guidelines, local regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency in statistical modeling, machine learning techniques, and econometrics.
- Advanced knowledge of SQL and programming languages such as Python or R.
- Experience with credit risk frameworks, Basel regulations, and financial data analysis.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and quantitative skills.
- Effective communication skills to present complex model results to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
Education
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as FRM, CFA, or PRM are highly desirable.
Experience
At least five years of hands‑on experience in credit risk modeling within a banking or financial services institution. Proven track record of developing and implementing credit risk models that comply with regulatory standards is essential.
