Job Overview

The Network Planning Engineer will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and expanding Airtel Malawi’s radio access network (RAN) in the northern region, with a primary focus on Mzuzu and surrounding districts. This role involves detailed analysis of traffic patterns, capacity forecasting, and the development of strategic rollout plans for 4G LTE and upcoming 5G technologies. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive radio frequency (RF) planning and drive site acquisition for new base stations in the Mzuzu region.
  • Perform capacity analysis, traffic forecasting, and performance modeling to support network expansion and optimization.
  • Develop detailed rollout plans, including site design, equipment specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with the RF, Core, and Field Operations teams to ensure timely implementation of network projects.
  • Monitor network KPIs post‑deployment, identify performance gaps, and propose corrective actions.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for senior management and regulatory bodies.
  • Stay updated on emerging telecommunications standards, especially 5G, and recommend adoption strategies.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in network planning tools such as Atoll, Planet, or Mentum.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large data sets and translate them into actionable plans.
  • Excellent knowledge of LTE and 5G NR technologies, RF propagation, and antenna systems.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Project management experience, including budgeting and timeline adherence.
  • Problem‑solving mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Cisco CCNP, Nokia NRS, or equivalent are advantageous but not mandatory.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience in network planning, optimization, or a similar role within a telecom operator or a reputable consultancy. Experience with LTE network rollouts in emerging markets is highly valued.
