Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Aquaculture Systems Engineer to join our team in Nkhotakota, Malawi. This role is central to our mission of transforming aquaculture practices through technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, installation, optimization, and maintenance of advanced aquaculture production systems, with a focus on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), water treatment, aeration, and monitoring technologies. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and other intensive aquaculture production facilities suitable for the Malawian climate and market.
• Conduct site assessments and feasibility studies for new aquaculture projects, analyzing water sources, land topography, and infrastructure requirements.
• Specify, procure, and oversee the installation of system components including pumps, biofilters, oxygenation systems, water quality sensors, and automated feeding systems.
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for system operation, maintenance, and biosecurity protocols.
• Monitor and optimize system performance using data analytics, focusing on key parameters such as water quality (ammonia, nitrite, pH, dissolved oxygen), feed conversion ratios, and growth rates.
• Provide technical training and support to local farm operators and technicians on system operation, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.
• Collaborate with nutritionists and veterinarians to integrate feeding and health management strategies into the system design for optimal fish performance.
• Lead research and development initiatives to adapt and innovate new technologies for tropical aquaculture, including energy-efficient solutions and waste valorization.
• Prepare detailed engineering reports, system manuals, and project documentation.
• Ensure all engineering designs and practices comply with local environmental regulations and international best practices for sustainable aquaculture.

Required Skills

• Proven expertise in the design and operation of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) or similar water treatment systems.
• Strong proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for system design and layout.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data from water quality monitoring systems.
• Project management skills, with experience in managing contractors, budgets, and timelines.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with diverse teams and stakeholders, including farmers with varying technical backgrounds.
• Knowledge of fish biology, husbandry practices, and common aquaculture diseases is a significant advantage.
• Adaptability and resilience to work in rural field conditions and troubleshoot technical issues on-site.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Aquacultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree in Aquaculture Systems, Water Resources Engineering, or a relevant discipline is highly preferred. Professional engineering certification or licensure is an advantage.

Experience

A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in aquaculture engineering, with a demonstrable track record in designing, commissioning, and managing RAS or other intensive aquaculture production systems. Experience working in developing country contexts, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, is highly desirable. Prior experience in training and capacity building for technical staff is essential.
