Job Overview

We are seeking a visionary and data-driven Digital Content Strategist to lead the development and execution of our digital content strategy across Malawi. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive digital content strategy for BBC Media Action’s projects in Malawi, encompassing social media, websites, podcasts, and SMS platforms.
  • Lead the content planning process, creating detailed editorial calendars that align with project cycles, campaign objectives, and key national dates.
  • Oversee the production of a wide range of digital content, including articles, social media posts, graphics, short videos, and interactive elements, ensuring high quality and brand consistency.
  • Conduct in-depth audience analysis using analytics tools to understand content performance, user behavior, and demographic trends, using insights to optimize future strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with production teams, researchers, and project managers to ensure digital content is accurate, evidence-based, and effectively communicates development messages.
  • Manage and grow our social media communities, fostering engagement and moderating discussions in line with BBC editorial guidelines and values.
  • Stay abreast of the latest digital trends, platform algorithms, and content formats relevant to the Malawian and African digital landscape.
  • Train and mentor junior team members and partners in digital content creation and best practices.
  • Prepare regular reports on content reach, engagement, and impact for internal stakeholders and donors.
  • Ensure all digital content is accessible, inclusive, and adheres to the highest standards of editorial integrity and safeguarding.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills for digital platforms.
  • Proven expertise in using social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer) and web analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Strong visual literacy and experience commissioning or creating basic graphic and video content.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and translate it into actionable strategic recommendations.
  • Deep understanding of the Malawian media landscape, digital adoption trends, and popular social media platforms.
  • Project management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to work effectively with diverse teams.
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa (written and spoken).

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Marketing, Digital Media, or a directly related field is required. A postgraduate qualification in digital marketing, strategic communications, or a related discipline is a strong advantage. Certifications in Google Analytics, social media marketing, or content strategy are highly desirable.

Experience

A minimum of five years of professional experience in a digital content strategy, digital marketing, or audience development role, preferably within a media organization, NGO, or agency setting. Demonstrable experience in developing and executing successful digital strategies that have grown audiences and engagement is essential. Experience working on social and behavior change communication (SBCC) or development projects is a significant asset. A proven track record of managing social media accounts for an organization and using data to inform content decisions is required.
