Job Overview
The Digital Payments Product Manager will be responsible for end‑to‑end product lifecycle management of Mastercard’s digital payment solutions in Malawi. This includes market research, product strategy, design, development, launch, and continuous improvement. The role requires close collaboration with cross‑functional teams such as engineering, compliance, risk, marketing, and sales to ensure product-market fit and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will act as the voice of the customer, translating market insights into actionable product roadmaps that drive adoption, revenue growth, and financial inclusion. Key Responsibilities
- Define and execute product strategy for digital wallets, QR code payments, and API‑based solutions tailored to the Malawian market.
- Conduct market analysis, competitor benchmarking, and stakeholder interviews to identify unmet needs and growth opportunities.
- Develop detailed product requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria in collaboration with engineering and design teams.
- Lead product launch initiatives, including go‑to‑market plans, pricing models, and partnership negotiations with banks and mobile operators.
- Monitor product performance metrics, gather user feedback, and iterate on features to enhance user experience and adoption rates.
- Ensure compliance with the Reserve Bank of Malawi regulations, data protection laws, and Mastercard’s security standards.
- Collaborate with risk and fraud teams to embed robust security controls and mitigate operational risks.
- Represent Mastercard at industry forums, conferences, and stakeholder meetings to promote thought leadership in digital payments.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of digital payment ecosystems, fintech trends, and mobile money platforms in Africa.
- Proven product management experience with a track record of launching successful digital financial products.
- Excellent analytical skills with ability to translate data into strategic decisions.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities across technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing payments in Malawi and the broader Southern African region.
- Agile methodology experience and proficiency with product management tools such as JIRA or Aha!.
- Leadership mindset with ability to influence cross‑functional teams without direct authority.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline is required. A master’s degree (MBA or related) is highly desirable and will be considered an advantage.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of product management experience in digital payments, fintech, or related technology sectors. Experience working in emerging markets, particularly within Sub‑Saharan Africa, is strongly preferred.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses and benefits outlined below.
