Job Overview

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental programs at Vale’s Mzimba mining complex. Reporting directly to the Site Director, you will be responsible for ensuring that all operations comply with local regulations, international standards such as ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, and Vale’s internal policies. The role involves close collaboration with engineering, operations, and community relations teams to embed a proactive safety mindset, reduce incident rates, and protect the surrounding ecosystem. This position is a cornerstone of Vale’s commitment to safe and sustainable mining, offering a platform to influence policy, mentor staff, and drive measurable performance improvements across the site.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive EHS management systems aligned with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
• Conduct regular risk assessments, audits, and inspections to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are completed.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and reporting to senior management and regulatory bodies.
• Coordinate emergency response planning, drills, and training for all site personnel.
• Collaborate with engineering and operations to integrate safety considerations into project design and execution.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Malawi mining regulations and ensure full compliance.
• Prepare and present EHS performance metrics, dashboards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Engage with local communities and NGOs to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable practices.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, especially within the mining sector.
• Proficiency in environmental impact assessment and mitigation strategies.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Leadership experience in managing multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to work under pressure and prioritize multiple projects.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of Chichewa is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.
