Job Overview

The Lead Solar Power Systems Engineer will spearhead the design, implementation, and optimization of utility‑scale solar photovoltaic (PV) installations across Malawi. Reporting to the Regional Engineering Director, you will oversee multidisciplinary teams, manage stakeholder relationships, and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This role involves close collaboration with local authorities, grid operators, and international financing institutions to secure permits, align technical specifications, and integrate solar assets into the national grid. You will also be responsible for driving innovation through the adoption of advanced monitoring, storage, and smart‑grid technologies, positioning Siemens Energy at the forefront of renewable energy development in Southern Africa. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end‑to‑end engineering of solar PV projects ranging from 10 MW to 100 MW, including site assessment, system design, and performance modeling.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and electrical teams to ensure seamless integration of balance‑of‑system components.
  • Develop detailed technical specifications, procurement packages, and vendor evaluation criteria.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and risk registers, providing regular status reports to senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with Malawian energy regulations, IEC standards, and Siemens internal quality procedures.
  • Oversee commissioning, testing, and handover activities, guaranteeing optimal system performance.
  • Mentor junior engineers and facilitate knowledge transfer through workshops and on‑site training.
  • Collaborate with financing partners to support project economics and secure funding.

Required Skills

  • Extensive experience in solar PV system design, simulation tools (PVsyst, SAM) and grid integration.
  • Strong project management capabilities, including scheduling software (MS Project, Primavera).
  • Proficiency in electrical standards, protection schemes, and inverter technologies.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with a data‑driven approach.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in multicultural teams and adapt to challenging field conditions.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., PMP, CEM) are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in solar power engineering, with at least three (3) years in a leadership or lead engineer role on utility‑scale projects. Demonstrated success in delivering projects from concept through commercial operation in Africa or similar emerging markets is essential.

Salary

The competitive remuneration package ranges from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a pension scheme aligned with local regulations.
