Job Overview

The Satellite Communications Specialist will design, implement, and maintain satellite link solutions that support MTN’s backbone network, ensuring reliable connectivity for voice and data services across remote regions of Malawi. This role involves collaborating with cross‑functional teams, managing vendor relationships, and optimizing satellite bandwidth to meet growing demand. The specialist will also play a critical part in disaster recovery planning, providing resilient communication pathways during emergencies. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer satellite communication architectures, including VSAT, GEO and LEO constellations, to support core network requirements.
• Configure, test, and commission satellite terminals, modems, and associated network equipment.
• Monitor satellite link performance, troubleshoot anomalies, and implement corrective actions to maintain SLA compliance.
• Collaborate with RF, core network, and IT teams to integrate satellite solutions with terrestrial infrastructure.
• Manage relationships with satellite service providers, negotiate contracts, and oversee service level agreements.
• Develop and maintain documentation, including network diagrams, technical specifications, and operational procedures.
• Lead capacity planning and bandwidth optimization initiatives to maximize cost‑efficiency.
• Participate in disaster recovery drills and ensure satellite links are ready for emergency communications.
• Stay abreast of emerging satellite technologies and recommend upgrades or new solutions.
• Provide technical training and mentorship to junior engineers and support staff.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of satellite communication protocols, modulation schemes, and frequency bands.
• Proficiency with satellite network management tools and performance monitoring software.
• Experience in RF engineering, link budgeting, and antenna alignment.
• Solid understanding of IP networking, MPLS, and QoS concepts.
• Excellent problem‑solving abilities and analytical thinking.
• Effective communication skills for cross‑departmental collaboration and vendor negotiations.
• Project management experience, including planning, scheduling, and risk assessment.
• Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Satellite Communications Professional (CSCP) or equivalent are advantageous.

Experience

At least five (5) years of hands‑on experience in satellite communications design, deployment, and maintenance is essential. Prior experience in a telecom operator environment, especially within the African market, will be considered a strong asset.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary ranging from SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances are also part of the compensation package.
