Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive safety audits across all mining pits, processing plants, and heavy machinery operations.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of existing Risk Management Systems (RMS) and recommend technical improvements.
• Lead incident investigation teams to identify root causes of near-misses or accidents using advanced forensic methodologies.
• Monitor compliance with the Mines and Minerals Act and other relevant Malawian statutory regulations.
• Develop and oversee the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for high-risk activities such as blasting and underground ventilation.
• Collaborate with site engineers to integrate safety-by-design principles into new mining infrastructure projects.
• Prepare detailed technical reports for the regional HSE directorate regarding audit findings and compliance status.

Required Skills

• Expert knowledge of international mining safety standards (ISO 45001) and risk assessment techniques.
• Advanced proficiency in conducting technical audits within deep-pit or underground mining environments.
• Strong analytical skills to interpret complex geological and operational data for safety forecasting.
• Exceptional leadership and communication skills to influence safety culture at all levels of the workforce.
• Proficiency in safety management software and digital reporting tools.

Education

Candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a closely related technical field. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH International Diploma or equivalent mining safety credentials are highly preferred and will be considered a significant advantage during the selection process.

Experience

A minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressive experience in the mining industry is required, with at least 5 years specifically focused on safety auditing or HSE management in large-scale mineral extraction operations. Proven experience working in Southern African mining contexts is an asset. Successful applicants will demonstrate a track record of reducing Lost Time Injury Frequency Rates (LTIFR) through proactive auditing and intervention.

Salary
