Job Overview

The Senior Structural Engineer will lead the design, analysis, and execution of complex structural projects that support Caterpillar’s equipment installations, client infrastructure, and community development initiatives in Mulanje and surrounding regions. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, ensure compliance with local building codes, and drive innovative, cost‑effective solutions. Key Responsibilities

• Lead structural design for commercial, industrial, and public works projects, including foundations, steel frames, and concrete structures.
• Perform advanced load calculations, seismic analysis, and wind load assessments in accordance with Malawi’s building regulations.
• Coordinate with architects, civil engineers, and construction managers to integrate structural systems seamlessly.
• Develop detailed construction drawings, specifications, and material take‑offs using BIM and CAD software.
• Oversee on‑site inspections, quality control, and compliance audits throughout the project lifecycle.
• Mentor junior engineers, conduct technical reviews, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
• Manage project budgets, timelines, and risk assessments to ensure successful delivery.

Required Skills

• Proficiency in structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or STAAD.Pro.
• Strong knowledge of International Building Code (IBC) and Malawi’s local construction standards.
• Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a data‑driven approach to design optimization.
• Effective communication skills for stakeholder engagement and client presentations.
• Leadership experience in multidisciplinary project teams.
• Ability to travel to project sites across Mulanje district and neighboring provinces.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is mandatory. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer) or Chartered Engineer status are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Candidates must have a minimum of eight years of progressive experience in structural engineering, with at least three years in a senior or lead role on large‑scale construction projects. Experience with heavy‑equipment foundations, industrial facilities, or infrastructure development in emerging markets is preferred.

Salary
