Job Overview

The Senior Urban Planning Engineer will lead the planning and design of urban infrastructure projects that align with national development strategies and local community needs. Reporting to the Head of Planning & Development, the role involves coordinating multidisciplinary teams, conducting feasibility studies, and ensuring compliance with zoning regulations and environmental standards. Key Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive urban master plans for new residential, commercial and mixed‑use districts in Karonga and surrounding areas.
• Lead site assessments, topographic surveys, and geotechnical investigations to inform design decisions.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, 3D models and GIS‑based spatial analyses.
• Coordinate with municipal authorities, utility providers and community stakeholders to secure permits and align project objectives.
• Manage project budgets, timelines and risk registers, ensuring delivery within scope and cost constraints.
• Integrate sustainable design principles, including green infrastructure, climate‑resilient drainage and energy‑efficient building practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and planners, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
• Monitor construction progress, conduct site inspections and resolve technical issues on‑site.
• Prepare technical reports, presentations and policy briefs for senior management and external partners.
• Stay abreast of international best practices, local regulations and emerging technologies in urban planning.

Required Skills

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS and BIM software.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and translate them into actionable plans.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Project management expertise, including familiarity with PMBOK or PRINCE2 methodologies.
• Knowledge of Malawi’s Building Code, Town and Country Planning Act, and environmental impact assessment procedures.
• Leadership qualities and experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
• Fluency in English; proficiency in Chichewa is an advantage.

Education

The successful candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Architecture or a closely related discipline from an accredited university. Professional certifications such as Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Certified Urban Planner (CUP) are highly desirable.

Experience

Applicants should have a minimum of eight years of progressive experience in urban planning, infrastructure design, or related fields, with at least three years in a senior or lead role. Experience working on large‑scale public‑private partnership projects in Sub‑Saharan Africa is a strong plus.

Salary
