Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Cryptocurrency Exchange Compliance Officer to establish and lead our regulatory compliance framework in Malawi. This critical role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring compliance programs specifically tailored to cryptocurrency exchange operations, ensuring adherence to Malawian financial regulations, international anti-money laundering (AML) standards, and global cryptocurrency compliance best practices. The successful candidate will serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory authorities in Malawi, conduct risk assessments of digital asset transactions, and implement robust Know Your Customer (KYC) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) procedures. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance policies and procedures for cryptocurrency exchange operations in Malawi
- Conduct regular risk assessments of digital asset transactions, customer activities, and business operations to identify potential compliance vulnerabilities
- Monitor and analyze regulatory developments in Malawi and internationally related to cryptocurrency, blockchain, and digital assets
- Implement and oversee robust AML/CFT (Combating Financing of Terrorism) programs specifically designed for cryptocurrency exchanges
- Manage the KYC/CDD process for Malawian customers, including enhanced due diligence for high-risk transactions
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports to Malawian financial authorities, including the Reserve Bank of Malawi and Financial Intelligence Authority
- Investigate suspicious transaction reports and file necessary reports with regulatory bodies
- Develop and deliver compliance training programs for staff on cryptocurrency-specific regulations and best practices
- Coordinate with global compliance teams to ensure consistency with international standards while meeting local regulatory requirements
- Conduct internal audits and compliance reviews of exchange operations, wallet services, and trading activities
Required Skills
- Expert knowledge of Malawian financial regulations, AML/CFT laws, and emerging cryptocurrency regulatory frameworks
- Deep understanding of blockchain technology, cryptocurrency transactions, and digital asset compliance requirements
- Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and apply them to cryptocurrency operations
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with regulatory authorities, internal stakeholders, and customers
- Proficiency with compliance monitoring tools, transaction monitoring systems, and blockchain analytics platforms
- Ability to develop and implement risk-based compliance programs for digital asset exchanges
- Strong ethical judgment and integrity with commitment to regulatory compliance and user protection
- Project management skills to lead compliance initiatives and regulatory implementation projects
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or related field is required. Advanced degrees (LLM, MBA, or Master’s in Compliance) are preferred. Professional certifications such as Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), or equivalent international compliance certifications are highly desirable. Specialized training in cryptocurrency regulations, blockchain compliance, or financial technology oversight will be considered a significant advantage.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in financial compliance, regulatory affairs, or anti-money laundering, with at least 2 years specifically in cryptocurrency, digital assets, or fintech compliance roles. Experience working with financial regulatory authorities in Malawi or similar jurisdictions is essential. Previous experience in developing compliance frameworks for emerging financial technologies, conducting cryptocurrency transaction monitoring, or implementing KYC procedures for digital asset platforms is required. Familiarity with international compliance standards for cryptocurrency exchanges and experience in regulatory reporting for digital asset businesses is necessary.
