Job Overview

The Health & Safety Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety policies and procedures that protect employees, contractors, and the surrounding community. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and update health and safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments specific to mining operations.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and incident investigations to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
• Provide safety training and toolbox talks to all personnel, ensuring understanding of safe work practices.
• Monitor compliance with Malawi occupational health and safety legislation, as well as Rio Tinto’s global standards.
• Maintain accurate records of incidents, near‑misses, and safety performance metrics.
• Collaborate with engineering and environmental teams to integrate safety considerations into project design and execution.
• Lead emergency response planning, drills, and post‑incident reviews.
• Prepare and present safety performance reports to senior management and external regulators.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of mining safety regulations and international standards such as ISO 45001.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities to assess risks and develop mitigation strategies.
• Excellent communication skills for delivering training and influencing safety culture.
• Proficiency in incident reporting software and data analysis tools.
• Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or CSP are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Salary
