Job Overview

The Hydrogeologist will lead technical assessments, data collection, and groundwater modeling for the World Bank’s water resources portfolio in Malawi. Working closely with project managers, local authorities, and community stakeholders, the incumbent will provide scientific expertise to inform policy recommendations, infrastructure design, and sustainable water use strategies. Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute hydrogeological field investigations, including well drilling, aquifer testing, and water quality sampling.
• Develop and calibrate groundwater flow models using software such as MODFLOW, FEFLOW, or equivalent tools.
• Analyze spatial and temporal data to assess groundwater availability, recharge rates, and contamination risks.
• Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and presentation materials for donors, government ministries, and community groups.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate hydrogeological findings into water supply, irrigation, and climate adaptation projects.
• Provide capacity‑building workshops and training sessions for local engineers, technicians, and stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with World Bank environmental and social safeguard policies.

Required Skills

• Advanced proficiency in groundwater modeling software and GIS applications.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex hydrogeological data.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Chichewa is an advantage.
• Project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and stakeholder coordination.
• Ability to work independently in remote field locations and adapt to challenging environmental conditions.

Education

A Master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates with a Ph.D. are highly desirable, especially those with research experience in African groundwater systems.

Experience

Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience conducting hydrogeological investigations, developing groundwater models, and delivering technical recommendations for water resource projects. Experience working with international development agencies or NGOs in Sub‑Saharan Africa is strongly preferred.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The compensation package includes performance‑based incentives, health insurance, and a pension scheme aligned with World Bank standards.
