Job Overview
The Financial Crime Compliance Officer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of anti‑money laundering (AML) and counter‑terrorist financing (CTF) frameworks for Ecobank Malawi’s Balaka operations. This role is critical to safeguarding the bank’s reputation, ensuring compliance with local and international regulations, and supporting the bank’s mission of secure and transparent financial services. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, update, and enforce Ecobank’s AML/CTF policies, procedures, and controls in line with the Bank of Malawi guidelines and FATF recommendations.
- Conduct thorough customer due‑diligence (CDD) and enhanced due‑diligence (EDD) reviews for high‑risk accounts, ensuring accurate risk ratings and documentation.
- Monitor daily transaction flows using advanced analytics and transaction monitoring systems to detect suspicious activities.
- Prepare and file Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) to the FIU within statutory timelines, providing detailed analysis and supporting evidence.
- Lead periodic compliance risk assessments, gap analyses, and internal audits to identify weaknesses and implement corrective actions.
- Provide training and awareness programs for staff across all business lines on AML/CTF obligations, red‑flag indicators, and reporting procedures.
- Collaborate with the legal department to interpret new regulations and advise senior management on compliance implications.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of emerging financial crime trends, typologies, and regulatory changes affecting the banking sector in Malawi and the broader region.
- Prepare comprehensive compliance reports for senior leadership, regulators, and external auditors.
- Support the development of a robust culture of compliance through continuous improvement initiatives and stakeholder engagement.
Required Skills
- In‑depth knowledge of AML/CTF regulations, including the Bank of Malawi AML Act, FATF standards, and international best practices.
- Strong analytical and investigative skills with the ability to interpret complex transaction data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of drafting clear reports and presenting findings to senior management.
- Proficiency in AML software tools and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with data visualization is a plus.
- High ethical standards, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently under pressure.
- Effective stakeholder management and the ability to influence cross‑functional teams.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Law, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Anti‑Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Financial Crime Specialist (CFCS), or equivalent are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in AML/CTF compliance, risk management, or a related regulatory function within a banking or financial services environment. Prior experience working with the Bank of Malawi’s regulatory framework or the Financial Intelligence Unit is advantageous.
Salary
The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary ranging from SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and incentives may be awarded in line with Ecobank’s remuneration policy.
