Job Overview

The Senior Hydrology Specialist will play a critical role in our technical assessment and implementation phase for large-scale water infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for conducting advanced hydrological modeling, assessing groundwater recharge rates, and designing sustainable water extraction strategies that protect local ecosystems. Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive hydrological surveys and groundwater mapping in diverse terrains across Northern Malawi.
• Develop and maintain complex mathematical models to predict water availability under various climate change scenarios.
• Collaborate with local government officials to integrate hydrological data into regional water management policies.
• Supervise field technicians during borehole drilling and water quality testing procedures.
• Prepare technical reports and feasibility studies for large-scale water supply projects.
• Monitor the impact of water extraction on local aquifers to prevent depletion and saltwater intrusion.

Required Skills

• Advanced proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and hydrological modeling software like MODFLOW.

• Strong project management capabilities and the ability to lead field-based technical teams.
• Deep understanding of environmental impact assessment (EIA) protocols and regulatory frameworks.

Education

A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, or a closely related Earth Science discipline is required. A Bachelor’s degree with significant specialized experience may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Experience

Candidates must possess at least 5 years of professional experience in hydrological research or water resource management, preferably within a development or NGO context. Proven experience in managing field-based technical projects in Sub-Saharan Africa is highly desirable.
