Job Overview
We are seeking a visionary and highly skilled Telecommunications Network Security Architect to join our Global Security Architecture team based in Neno, Malawi. This senior role is critical for designing, implementing, and governing the security architecture for our core and radio access networks across Malawi and the surrounding region. You will be responsible for developing robust security frameworks that protect our 4G, 5G, and future network technologies from sophisticated cyber threats. Key Responsibilities
- Design and document end-to-end security architecture for telecommunications networks, including 5G core, RAN, transport, and cloud platforms.
- Develop and enforce security policies, standards, and blueprints aligned with industry frameworks (3GPP, NIST, ISO 27001).
- Conduct threat modeling and security risk assessments for new network technologies and services before deployment.
- Architect and oversee the implementation of zero-trust network access (ZTNA) models and secure service-based architectures (SBA) for 5G.
- Lead the security design for network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) environments.
- Collaborate with vendors and partners to evaluate and integrate third-party security solutions into the network ecosystem.
- Provide expert guidance to incident response teams during major security events affecting network infrastructure.
- Stay abreast of emerging threats targeting telecommunications systems and proactively design defensive measures.
- Mentor junior security engineers and analysts within the team.
Required Skills
- Expert knowledge of 3GPP security specifications, 5G security architecture (SEPP, SBA), and LTE/EPC security.
- Deep technical proficiency in cloud security (AWS, Azure, OpenStack), container security (Kubernetes, Docker), and microservices security.
- Strong understanding of cryptography, PKI, network protocols, and secure coding practices.
- Proven ability to develop architecture artifacts (views, models, patterns) using methodologies like SABSA or TOGAF.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical risks for business stakeholders.
- Project management skills and experience leading cross-functional security initiatives.
Education
A Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field is required. Candidates must hold at least one advanced professional certification such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP), SABSA Chartered Architect, or The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) certification. Ongoing education in emerging telecom security trends is expected.
Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in telecommunications network security, with at least three years specifically in a security architecture role. Must have hands-on experience designing security for 5G standalone (SA) networks, cloud-native core networks, and virtualized RAN. Demonstrated experience in conducting security reviews of network designs and producing actionable architecture recommendations. Prior work in a telecom equipment vendor or mobile network operator environment is highly desirable.
